CO2.Earth is live!!

CO2.Earth has Launched!

November 13, 2013

CO2.Earth is now live.  I am proud that it is one of the very first websites on the internet with a .earth domain.  The first .earth site to launchdemocracy.earth—happened last week.  This week, CO2.Earth is the site that's rolling out, just before .earth domains open for public registration on December 19, 2015.

Also, just in time for the international climate summit in Paris, CO2.Earth takes over global redistribution of CO2 data from CO2Now.org

CO2.Earth is here to track the atmospheric CO2 trend along with you.  Any time you want an update for earth's planetary vital signs, CO2.Earth points to the  latest numbers.

Producer, CO2.Earth

P.S. Please note that some articles and the set up of CO2 web widgets are still being completed.

A History of 'Earth’s CO2 Home Page'

December 17, 2007  Michael McGee launched the first atmospheric CO2-focussed website, a simple, one-page html site at themostimportantnumber.org.

Spring 2008  McGee created the world’s first CO2 web widget that people continue to use worldwide to track and display atmospheric CO2 readings on their websites and blogs.

September 1, 2008   McGee moved “Earth’s CO2 Home Page” and website from themostimportantnumber.org to CO2Now.org.

Since December 17, 2007  McGee has faithfully kept the latest atmospheric CO2 data on display on Earth's CO2 Home Pages and on many hundreds of websites and blogs worldwide with CO2 website widgets.

2015 Launch of CO2.earth

  • CO2.earth helps people of many countries and backgrounds access the biggest indicators for planetary health and sustainability.
  • A powerful translation tool is built into the site to make pages readable in 57 languages.
  • The latest in responsive website technology is used to reach the 45% of the world's people who are connected to the internet with devices of many makes and screen sizes.

Website with a Purpose

195 member countries of the United Nations have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).  This agreement includes an ultimate climate objective to stabilize the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere.  CO2.earth provides an informal place to track planetary changes as they happen and explore pre-requisites for their stabilization.

UN Paris Climate Talks

CO2.earth brings focus to quantified indicators that enable people to sense and know planetary changes for themselves.  Of relevance to UN climate talks in Paris (November 30 - December 11, 2015), the site includes indictors for gauging the degree of progress toward internationally-adopted targets that bring global warming to an end.

Show.Earth: Show The Trend That You Are Tracking
Show.earth

  • Michael McGee is launching Show.earth at the same time as CO2.earth as a repository for tools that people and organizations can use to show the planetary trends they are tracking.
  • Show.earth starts as simply the new “go to” place for CO2 website widgets that people and organizations can embed on their websites and blogs.
  • Show.earth has been designed with built-in potential to expand its offerings over time.

.earth Domains

  • Registration of .earth domains is tied to a voluntary pledge:

“By registering a domain in the .earth TLD, Registrants voluntarily pledge to become ambassadors for Earth and do away with actions that harm Earth and its inhabitants.”

  • By invitation from Interlink Co. Ltd., the Registry Operator for .earth Top Level Domains (TLDs), CO2.earth and Show.earth are founding members of an emerging community that share a common domain name and pro-earth pledge.
  • Information about .earth domains, registration, registration terms and conditions (including voluntary pledges) is available at domain.earth, a website maintained by Interlink.

Front Lines of Global Change

The metaphor of 'vital signs' might bring up hospital images of beeping instruments that show changing numbers and blinking charts.  But the instruments are not the sole source of important information.  The people have their human stories to share.  They have histories, insights and hopes that are often interwoven.  They offer an intelligent and caring perspective that no electro-mechanical instrument can provide.

This website speaks to the usefulness and importance of scientific data and information about the changing climate and earth system.  This page acknowledges that even planetary data does not tell the whole story

"Front lines of global change" was created as a place you may discover that we live in a world where human experiences are rich with insight about the earth, and where local knowledge is vitally important.  It starts as a modest selection of links that can grow over time.

R we?

Are we stabilizing yet?

It's a fair question.

Look, we have 195 countries and the EU that have signed the UNFCCC and its ultimate climate objective to achieve a timely stabilization of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.  So, are we doing it, or not?

It's a fair question, and it's also a limited question.  It's a binary question that points to a simple 'yes' or 'no' result.

If you don't like the answer you come up with, you may be motivated to ask some follow-up questions.

There are lots of questions you might ask.

You could ask a physical science question like this: "What measurable level of emissions must be acheived to stabilize atmospheric CO2?"  Or you could ask an earth systems question about how GHG stabilization enables temperature stablizations and climate stabilization.  There are also social-systems question like, "How do we work together and achieve stabilization?".  And there is the obvious personal question many of us ask ourselves:  "What can I possibly do as an individual that would make a difference in this big world?

To the last question, the launch of CO2.Earth is premised on a belief that tracking atmospheric CO2 levels is one fo the most basic and important thigs an individual can do.  It's a way of learning about the earth system as a whole.  It's an activity that should enable some people to better understand our current planetary situation and what responses are helpful and appropriate.  It helps to build capacity and support for responses that match the nature and scale of the problem.  Tracking CO2 and learning about the earth system is a critical early step that enables people to see what actions help.  It is a way to discover possibilities in areas that seem impossible.

"Are we stabilizing yet?" is a starting question that aims to promote global thinking about the most important environmental problems facing humanity and the wider community of life.  We hope you find some inspiration it.

This EARTH project is designed to spread a warning, around the globe. It's designed to spread a message of hope, too--if we rise to our potential as humans, we'll be able to cope with the most dangerous problem we've ever faced, and begin to work our way towards a clean, renewable future.
